Kolkata Doctor's Rape-Murder Sparks Political Protests: BJP's Women's Wing to Hold Candlelight Rally Demanding CM Mamata Banerjee's Resignation

Kolkata is on edge as political tensions flare following the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Mahila Morcha, the women's wing of the party, has announced a candlelight rally on Friday, August 16. The rally, set to march to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence, demands her resignation over the shocking incident and the subsequent vandalism at the hospital.

The horrific crime, which took place on August 9, has led to widespread outrage, with multiple organizations and political parties taking to the streets in protest. The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) has also called for a 12-hour general strike across West Bengal, demanding swift justice and the arrest of all those involved in the brutal crime.

As the situation escalates, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced plans to lead her own protest on August 17, calling for capital punishment for the accused. She has urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to expedite the investigation and deliver justice by the end of the week.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared a 24-hour nationwide strike on August 17, withdrawing all non-emergency medical services in protest against the incident and the violence that ensued at the hospital. Similar demonstrations are expected in other states, with the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) planning a protest in Mumbai's Azad Maidan, and the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) organizing a candlelight march at India Gate.

The tragedy has united various sectors, including the Bengali film and television industry, with many expressing solidarity with the protesting doctors at RG Kar Medical College. As Kolkata braces for a day of rallies and strikes, the city remains tense, with citizens and authorities alike calling for justice and an end to the violence.
